Hofflander and Peus Qualify for Women’s Tennis ITA Fall Nationals

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Junior Lindsey Hofflander and sophomore Phoebe Peus won three matches on Sunday to qualify for the ITA Fall Nationals.

Hofflander and Peus first took down third-seeded senior Maia Sung and freshman Bella Chhiv from Princeton (6-4, 77-62), then senior Lexi Dewire and sophomore Brooke Hess from Dartmouth (6-2, 4-6, [10]-[7]). In the finals the duo beat grad student Samantha Nanere and sophomore Maiko Uchijima from Temple (6-3, 710-68).

Senior Ali Benedetto and junior Addison Ahlstrom won in the quarterfinals by defeating the four seed from Syracuse, but fell in the semis.

Peus played strong in the semifinals of singles, but lost in a close match to the sixth seed in the field.

“It was an excellent day for Brown Women’s tennis,” said Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser. “In singles, Phoebe’s opponent came out really strong in the first set with powerful serving and great return game. The second set was a battle as Phoebe adjusted her game plan and made her opponent more uncomfortable with variety and great serving. Even though Phoebe was a point away from taking the set a few times, her opponent was clutch in crucial moments and took the match. It was a great event in singles for Phoebe and once again she showed a lot of resilience, fight and increased competitive maturity.”

“In the quarterfinals of doubles, Addie and Ali played an experienced team from Syracuse. They played with variety and increased clarity, playing a great match breaker with aggressive play to take the match. In the semifinals, Ali and Addie raised their level and came close to winning their match against an excellent Temple team. I’m excited about the improvement Ali and Addie are making with each match they play.”

“Lindsey and Phoebe won all three of their doubles matches with their signature aggressive play,” continued Schmidhuaser. “They were so tough under pressure in all of their matches to qualify for Fall National Championships! I’m so proud of our team and the improvement they are making in their ability to perform under pressure and raise their level when it matters most.”
