Several thousand people donned costumes on Sunday, Oct. 22, to take part in San Pedro’s 11th Dia de los Muertos festival in the downtown area near the harbor.
Food, crafts and entertainment with colorful mariachis and folklorico dancers took center stage.
So did the altars created in tribute to departed family and friends. Among the tributes were those to L.A. Laker Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna, who were killed in a helicopter crash in 2020, and Angela Romero, who established a following of friends and fans with her dedication to bringing San Pedro’s history to life. She died in 2022 at the age of 43.
The Day of the Dead event has grown into one of the more popular attractions in San Pedro since it was launched by the Downtown Business Improvement District. The event also featured costume parades and awards.
