I am writing on the topic of genres of literature at Monticello High School and what students are reading within the classroom. Currently, students at Monticello High School are reading traditional and classic novels. While this is important, it does not help all students become engaged in learning. Students deserve to read different pieces of literature that includes comic books. Comic books help engage readers who like more illustrations with fewer words. Through comic books, students can analyze literature in a different way than the traditional novel. Students can look at the illustrations, and how it brings the comic to life. Comic books are effective for students to expand their knowledge of illustrations and text in a new way. This gives students opportunities to learn in different ways than reading the traditional novel. 

According to Jason DeHard, in his article published by Edutopia in 2019, “Using Comic Books for Serious Learning”, there are many advantages to teaching comics within the classroom. He brings up the importance of reaching all students, especially ones who do not have time or passion to read outside of class; comics give students a new perspective on literature. Through the illustrations and speech bubbles, students can enter a new world and look at how they tell the story. This gives students the opportunity to care for and find comfort in what they are reading. It helps students express and explore ideas through images and how they connect to the comic. It lights sparks and passion within students who do not find passion in reading traditional novels. This also gives students options within learning that help them grow into brighter and more passionate students. When students care about their learning and find joy in their learning, it makes all the difference. Students deserve to read comics in schools to help them learn in a new way that is both reflective and inspiring.
