PHS LAX ends season in record fashion

PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh High boys and girls lacrosse teams saw the regular season conclude on what has been arguably the best seasons for both teams in recent history.

While the boys wrapped up a season with a 10-3 record, the girls closed up the regular season with three straight home games and finished with a program best five wins.

Under first year head coach Alfie Ladue, the Hornet girls saw exponential growth from the beginning of the season to the end.

Ryan Breen, the boys coach, always showed his pride in how hard his team worked to finish with double digit wins as they finished behind Massena and Canton in Section X. But, the Hornets were the top team in Division II with a 4 ½ game lead over Colton-Pierrepont.

SOUTH COLTON — Sometimes teams don’t have their best, and have to find different ways to win. That’s what Plattsburgh needed in its 12-8 victory over Colton-Pierrepont.

“This was a great game to finish off our conference schedule,” Breen said. “The growth of our team, both individually and as a unit, is what I’m most proud of.

“Tonight was sloppy and definitely not our best effort, especially on the defensive end, but we pulled it together just enough to beat a talented Colton-Pierrepont roster. “

Preston Daniels and Luca Meyer led the Hornets with four goals each.

“Nick Clookey was a big body on the crease for us tonight, scoring twice,” Breen said. “He’s made such an impact, for a first-year player. “

The unfortunate thing for the Hornets is the uncertainty of the schedule looking ahead. Thursday’s game may have been the last time that particular team got together to play.

“This may have been the last game for our Seniors and we’re definitely going to miss them,” Breen said. “Preston (Daniels), Ethan (Breen) and Owen (Pray) have been playing together since elementary school and they’ve set a high standard for how Plattsburgh-area lacrosse players need to work and improve.

“The “new” guys: AJ Swetson, Nick Clookey, Bryce DeAngelo, Evan Dixon; all came in and made a huge, positive impact on the team. The future of lacrosse in Section VII is brighter because of the efforts of these fine young men.”

FRANKLIN ACADEMY 7 (OT)

PLATTSBURGH — A team looking for its first win can always be tough competition and Franklin Academy showed that tenacity to Plattsburgh. The Hornets would hold on to win, 8-7 in overtime.

When the three minute overtime period began, Plattsburgh would control most of the possession.

With time ticking down Lily Forrence scored the game winning goal as Marin Juneau made a key interception of a clearance pass.

It would be a hard fought game throughout as PHS would take the lead numerous times only for the Huskies to fight right back into the game.

With the score 5-3 in favor of Plattsburgh going into the third period, Franklin Academy would score the period’s only goal to make it 5-4.

The Hornets would push the lead back to 7-5 with minutes to go, but the Huskies wouldn’t give up and made it a tie game as the horn sounded.

However, PHS took control and earned their fifth win of the season.

Plattsburgh spread the scoring around in their final victory while having fantastic goaltending from Sophia Amaya-Gutierrez.

There were also excellent efforts from defensive regulars, Morgan Hall, Cali Castine, Kadey Rivera and Reese Boire.

PLATTSBURGH — It was a high scoring first half, but the defenses clamped down in the second frame.

Heuvelton would outscore Plattsburgh 9-7 in the first half, and the Hornets weren’t able to close the game and fell 13-12.

Even with the PHS defense picking up its intensity the deficit was too much to overcome between to high powered offenses.

Taylor Durney and Reese Gregoire led the Hornets with four goals a piece.

Marin Juneau and Lizzy Burnham grabbed the other goals for Plattsburgh.

The Heuvelton pair of Saige Blevins and Raya McGraw proved too much for the Hornets to slow down. Blevins scored six to McGraw’s five goals.
