As we travel near and far today, our mode of transportation is generally by private automobile, airplane or train. Whether we are going on vacation, traveling back and forth to college, or visiting relatives or friends, our manner of travel is fairly consistent. Join me today as I take this trip, back in the day, when travel was primarily by bus.
Although I cannot tell you the last time I took an extremely long bus trip, I readily recall my first and early bus trips. My first trip was mid 1962 when I boarded a Trailways bus at its terminal at 13th and Filbert streets to travel to Fort Knox, Kentucky, for basic training in the U.S. Army. While not remembering all of the intricacies of this trip, I do remember the long ride. I also recall shedding tears as my father helped me to board the bus. With no travel companion, the trip seemed to take forever. What an experience!
