SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Travel experts say the Memorial Day holiday weekend will be just a snapshot of what is to come for this busy summer season.
Whether it’s a road trip over state lines or an international excursion, big travel plans are happening this summer.
Experts say to be prepared because it’s going to be busier than ever, with more cars on the roads, and congested security lines at airports. “I try to have a mindset that it’s going to be crazy, and that’s how travel goes and once you get there you can rest,” says Mary Johnson of Springfield.
Summer travel is already soaring for this Memorial Day Weekend, with AAA projecting about 44 million travelers, which is the second-highest traveling forecast for Memorial Day weekend since 2000.
AAA experts say high demand and inflation will cause some sticker shock for those looking to book everything from hotels and dining to rental cars and airfare. They say while your dollar may go further overseas, compared to prices in the U.S., you should book now for the best deals.
Mark Schieldrop with AAA Northeast told 22News, “It’s a really clear indicator that we are going to have a strong summer. There are some places where prices will be more reasonable, but we are seeing price increases anywhere from 5 to 15 and even 30% in some really popular locations.”
Schieldrop encourages people to utilize travel agents to find the best deals, and in the event of delays or cancellations, travel insurance can also help.
