Survey Highlights Importance of Outdoor Activities for Mental Health

Research consistently demonstrates that spending time in nature can significantly boost mental health. Survey Reveals Americans’ Craving for the Outdoors

A recent poll of 2,000 U.S. adults conducted by RVshare revealed that more than half of Americans (57%) are yearning for more time outdoors. The survey found that people need an average of 67 minutes outside daily to feel refreshed. Key findings include:

  • 68% of respondents said outdoor time relaxes them.
  • 66% reported that it puts them in a better mood.
  • 64% mentioned it helps clear their minds.

Conversely, spending excessive time indoors can lead to negative emotions:

  • 38% reported feelings of depression.
  • 33% experienced anxiousness.
  • 32% felt lonely.

Fifty-eight percent of respondents admitted they become stir-crazy after spending too much time indoors, with the average threshold being 10.5 hours.

Positive Impact on Mental Health

Overall, outdoor trips are positively impacting American lives. The survey found that 83% of respondents who vacation in the great outdoors experience reduced stress (36%), mental recharging (33%), and increased gratitude for what they have (23%).
