Bella Hadid is one of those characters who knows how to make an impact on the red carpet in order to later grab the headlines. Wearing a completely sheer brown chiffon design, the American model has confidently stepped onto the Cannes Film Festival red carpet, reaffirming one of the most prominent trends of 2024: the naked dress.
The film festival on the French Riviera has been more of a reaffirmation of this trend, as it has been seen before at the Oscars pre-party and also in early May at the Met Gala. In 2024, chiffon and sheer fabrics take center stage. Designs that leave little to the imagination and have become the new obsession of luxury, or rather, of celebrities.
The transparent dress is known as a naked dress, and although it has always had a certain prominence on red carpets with nude linings, over the years it has been taken to extreme levels. Some play with deception by combining it with nude underwear, however, many others shamelessly exhibit their naked bodies covered only by that ultra-fine gauze called a naked dress.
The trend is closely related to the “free the nipple” movement, which questions the convention of deeming indecent the exposure of women’s nipples, and the conscious display of the female body in the face of the historical scrutiny that society has always imposed on them.
Beyond sheer chiffon, many designers have opted to use more sophisticated fabrics such as embroidery or fabrics with crystal or sequin embellishments. The latter fabric is one of the most seen on the red carpet, where this year it has been worn by celebrities like Emily Ratajkowski and Jennifer Lopez.
The extreme trend, as is often the case in these circles, has not taken long to reach the streets in a more subdued way. Fashion enthusiasts are rocking the popular naked dress with black or nude stockings or underwear, opting for corseted bras to give it a more daring look.
