Students from the Lawrence County Career and Technical Center vented their frustrations while benefiting a good cause Wednesday.
The students held their annual Car Smash fundraiser to benefit the Wounded Warriors of Western PA.
It is organized by the school’s PEER Leadership and Interact Clubs.
“It’s organized chaos. We just finished (the Keystone exams) today. They need it,” said teacher and advisor Donna Pasterik.
Students Coulter Street, Jhenavesza Miller and Mackenzie Mohr led the organization and planning of the event and collecting the money.
In other school news, Commercial Arts Instructor Anthony DeRosa was recently chosen as one of four Innovative Teaching Grant award winners from the Pennsylvania State Education Association.
The PSEA awarded $1,500 to DeRosa for helping to develop the student-run entrepreneurship program “The Art Mart.”
He accepted the award May 17 at the PSEA House of Delegates ceremony in Pittsburgh in front of around 500 attendees.
“We will be using the money to purchase consumable materials for next year’s students to design and produce custom commercial art products for our Art Mart store,” DeRosa said.
DeRosa said he proposed the idea of the Art Mart in 2021, with all items original student designs that they produce, market and sell in the community, learning trade and entrepreneurial skills along the way.
Over $1,000 worth of merchandise was sold in the first year.
“It also serves as a way to restore pride to our once thriving county. All of the students’ products are branded under our slogan ‘Made in Lawrence County,’ and we want customers to see just how much creative talent our young artists have to offer and to sport the products with a sense of local pride,” DeRosa said.
Two seniors annually are chosen on merit to serve as art director and general manager of the store, working with their peers to help manage and approve products for the store.
