Memorial Day travel safety tips

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) – Memorial Day is approaching, but before you start packing the car, there are a few things to remember before hitting the road.

With the nicer spring weather making some appearances, there is a chance of seeing more two-wheeled vehicles on the road.

“Just make sure that you’re aware that there is going to be more motorists out there, especially on motorcycles or bicycles,” Sioux City Police sergeant Tom Gill said. “That’s why it’s important to obey the speed limit. Make sure you are aware and courteous of other drivers.”

It is recommended to anyone drinking this weekend to plan ahead with a designated driver or ride share service. Once you’re in the car don’t forget to buckle up either.

“Sometimes, maybe if you’ve had a few drinks, we forget to do things, simple tasks that we normally do,” Gill said. “Make sure that you always, when you get in that car, put your seatbelt on.”

AAA expects 38.4 million people to travel by car over Memorial Day weekend.
