SOUTHSIDE, Ala. (WBRC) – A high school senior in Gadsden now has a new car thanks to a dealership giveaway that rewards good grades. This year’s winner is from Southside High School, and Principal Julie Tuckers says she’s not surprised.
“Grades are so important and academics are so important, they can take students so far,” said Tucker.
Those good grades earned Lindsey Zheng a brand new car. The high school senior entered a contest through the Devan Lowe car dealership where President Kendall Lowe Hamilton says grades are important.
“About 17 years ago, we decided as a dealership that we wanted to promote and support local education. I had this idea why don’t we give away a car to a local high school senior, so we created the Devan Lowe Honor Roll Program. Basically any local high school senior that makes all A’s and B’s the first three grading periods can come by and register,” said Kendall.
It was a surprise to Lindsey. She says finding out who won the car became an afterthought at times because she couldn’t find any information.
“It was never announced so, when I got the call from Mrs. Tucker on Thursday about a special opportunity, I was like, I wonder if it’s that car. Cause I was checking Facebook and everything. I was looking on the Southside Facebook, I was looking at the dealership Facebook. I’m like, no one won that car. Like, is it going to be me and it was me,” said Lindsey.
Proud of her student, Principal Tucker says you can still be rewarded for making good grades in school when you try your best.
“Knowledge is power. I’m thrilled that Lindsey is the recipient of this, that she took her report card to Devan Lowe, that she was chosen for this. She is an honor roll student, she’s actually number three in her class, and so academics really played into this and I’m just very proud of her,” said Tucker.
Lindsey says she’s aiming for daughter of the year because she has a car and plans to give this one to her father.
