Refugio woman, children involved in car-train crash

A Refugio woman and her three children were transported to Refugio County Memorial Hospital on Friday after the vehicle they were occupying was struck by a train at the crossing at U.S. Highway 77 and Vidaurri Road in Refugio County.

According to a Texas Department of Public Safety spokesperson, Hallie Martinez, 28, of Refugio was traveling eastbound on Vidaurri Road, approaching the railroad crossing at approximately 8:10 a.m. in a 2019 GMC Acadia. Passengers in the vehicle were her children ages 5, 1, and 11 months.

The train, which was traveling northbound, was approaching the crossing when the Acadia failed to stop and yield the right-of-way to the train, according to the DPS.

The Acadia was struck on the passenger side of the vehicle by the front of the train and pushed into the grass northwest of the crossing.
