Springfield mental health official shares how to best handle road rage situations

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Whether traveling over the Memorial Day weekend or just rushing to work, road rage is something that can impact anyone.

With that in mind, mental health experts have some tools you can use if tempers flare.

Counselors say it’s important to recognize our own stress responses, like an increased heart rate or labored breathing. In these situations, they recommend slowing our actions and thoughts down so we don’t react impulsively.

Being proactive can also help. Mapping out your route ahead of time, avoiding congested roads, or listening to relaxing music are all ways to set yourself up for success.

And although we can’t control other drivers, there are techniques you can use to de-escalate a tense situation.

“Create distance. Be slow in your responses. Just really consider what the other person is saying. Let them finish what their thoughts are. Be compassionate. Again, we just don’t know what their story is,” said Christina Hull with Burrell Behavioral Health.

If an angry driver is following you, heading to a police station or a crowded place is a good idea. And if you find yourself in a dangerous situation, you can always call 911.
