SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – A new art installation dedicated to supporting the mental health of police officers is on display in Springfield.
The SPD Be Well Bell was painted by Susie Dains, an inclusion educator with Abilities First.
A placard by the bell lists a web address, phone number, and QR code to help people connect with mental health services.
Those who worked to bring the bell to police headquarters hope it can be a resource to anyone passing by who may need help.
“mental awareness is definitely something important to me and also meant for so many other people. if my art can inspire people to get that help they need, I’m glad to donate my services and my time to give them that little hope that they need,” said Susan Dains with Abilities First art instructor.
In the 1950s, many of the shackles and chains that had been used as restraints in asylums were melted down and then cast into bells as a sign of hope.
Burrell Behavioral Health is also donating handmade planters for the space around the Be Well Bell. Burrell has been placing Be Well Bells at various locations across Springfield.
