Woman claims water was inside gasoline that resulted in car issues; mechanic gives tips to avoid bad gas

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) – Memorial Day weekend is here, but before you hit the road, you may want to make sure your car is properly serviced so you can avoid costly repairs in the future.

There have been several reports recently of high water levels in gas. This can happen after storms when water leaks into underground gas tanks that are not properly sealed. KSLA spoke with a Shreveport mechanic, who says cars that have been flooded or that have water in their fuel tanks could experience problems with the engine.

“Well, the first thing they [cars] will do is usually they stop within a mile of the gas station, so usually no more than five miles. Usually you will know pretty quick when you have a bunch of water in there. If it is just a little bit of water, you may notice it running bad, maybe missing a little bit, and if it does die, the best to do is getting it towed in,” said Dax Ulrich, a mechanic at Southern Automotive in Shreveport.

One Shreveport resident recently reported to KSLA her truck is in the shop right now because of this very problem. She says she got gas at a station on Bert Kouns when she started noticing problems just 10 minutes later. She says now, her truck is in the shop… right before a scheduled family trip on June 4.
