Airbnb to use AI to crack down on parties ahead of Halloween

Halloween is nearly here, and Airbnb is working to keep hosts, guests, and properties safe using artificial intelligence.

Across the US and Canada, Airbnb’s AI-driven anti system will take steps to identify potentially-high-risk booking requests for one- or two-night listings for entire homes over the weekend leading up to Halloween. The technology identifies a series of various indicators of disruptive or problematic parties, such as the length of the trip, distance to the property, and the time before the booking.

If they technology identifies enough risk factors, the system will prevent the booking.

Customers may still book Airbnb reservations through Halloween, though if you’re planning to, you’ll have to confirm that you understand Airbnb has enacted a ban on parties. and could face suspension from using the service if this rule is broken.

“While disruptive parties are rare, we want to try to reduce the risk of them even more,” Naba Banerjee, Airbnb’s head of trust and safety said in a media release. “Our AI anti-party system is an important tool in helping us to do that, and we’re optimistic it will have a positive impact for our community and neighborhoods this Halloween.”

The service’s global party ban went into effect in August of 2020, and its crackdown showed a 55% drop in reports of disruptive parties in the time since. In 2022, thousands of bookings across the U.S. were blocked for the Halloween weekend, which led to a decrease in the number of reports of unauthorized parties on Airbnb properties over that holiday weekend.
