The Telegraph reported on April 21 that the Duchess of Sussex sent a letter to her father-in-law King Charles III about her worries about unconscious bias in the royal family around the time of her and Harry’s talk with Oprah Winfrey in 2021. During their time with Oprah, Meghan said that her husband, Prince Harry, and an unnamed royal had “several conversations” about “how dark” the skin of their first child would be.

The Telegraph also said that this supposed communication between Charles and Meghan is “thought to be one of the reasons” she won’t attend the upcoming crowning.

Now, the duchess is talking about the rumors about why she won’t be at the future event.

“The Duchess of Sussex is going about her life in the present, not thinking about correspondence from two years ago related to conversations from four years ago,” a spokesperson for her said in a statement to E! News on April 22. “Any suggestion otherwise is false and frankly ridiculous.”

The spokesperson also said, “We encourage tabloid media and various royal correspondents to stop the exhausting circus that they alone are creating.”

A representative for the couple told E! News on April 12 that Harry will be at the wedding while Meghan stays in California with their two young children, Archie Harrison, 3, and Lilibet Diana, 22 months. This started the rumors that she wouldn’t go.

Buckingham Palace also stated at the time that Harry would be at the coronation, which will happen on May 6, which is Archie’s 4th birthday.

Even though Meghan and Harry didn’t go to the royal event together, they were still in the souvenir program, which hit newsstands in the U.K. on April 17.

One of King Charles’ 70th birthday pictures was included in the pamphlet. It shows the Duke and Duchess of Sussex standing next to King Charles, Queen Camilla, Kate Middleton, Prince William, and their three children, Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 7, and Prince Louis, 4.

George will play an important part in the coronation as one of the eight Pages of Honour who will walk in the procession and take the robes into Westminster Abbey. Camilla’s grandkids Freddy Parker Bowles, Gus Lopes, Louis Lopes, and her great-nephew Arthur Elliot will join George at this event.

Before the event, the Palace said, “The coronation will reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry.”
