A woman was rescued Friday afternoon by Mobile fire officials after her car ignited in flames from downed power lines, according to a release.
“It was a bad situation, getting worse as time went on. We were very fortunate to get her out of there,” Capt. Charles Andrews with the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department said in the release.
The incident began around 4:30 p.m. in the 7700 block of Hitt Road in Mobile.
Engine 26 arrived on scene to find a power pole down and high voltage power lines nearby. The power lines had fallen onto the roof of a Toyota Camry being driven by the woman.
Wind in the area caused one of the wires that was resting against the car to ignite the ceiling liner of the vehicle, according to the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department.
To get the woman out of the vehicle, firefighters slid a 10-foot-long pike pole onto the roof of the car, then used a 6-foot pike pole to open the car door.
After Alabama Power cut the power supply to the downed lines, fire crews used water and foam to extinguish the car fire, according to officials. No injuries were reported.
