ODOT: New ‘SmartLane’ technology coming to part of I-275 loop


The Ohio Department of Transportation announced in a press release Saturday that a new “SmartLane” is coming to the northeastern part of the Interstate 275 loop in June.According to ODOT, SmartLanes work by “allow an extra lane of travel on upgraded highway shoulders for use during certain times to alleviate congestion and aid incident management efforts.” The release notes the new SmartLane will “provide for capacity on the interstate’s westbound lanes between Loveland-Madeira Road and Reed Hartman Highway during peak travel times and, in turn, improve safety.”The additional lane will be open most typically on weekdays from 6 to 9 a.m. and during other times of expected high traffic flow. The speed limit will also be reduced to 55-mph when the lane is open, down from its usual 65-mph posting.The first SmartLane ever opened in Ohio was on the Interstate 670 highway in Columbus. This will be the first use of the technology ever implemented by ODOT in the Greater Cincinnati region.
