Unfortunately for fans of the classic children’s book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, George Lopez will no longer be playing the title role in the upcoming film adaptation. The comic was supposed to have a small part in the new Disney+ movie, but on Monday, he pulled out. This is Disney’s second movie based on a book by Judith Viorst. In 2014, Miguel Areta made a movie based on the book.
Lopez was supposed to play Gil, who drives a motorcycle and is the head of the Garcia family. No one has been chosen to take over. The movie is still being made in New Mexico, and Eva Longoria, Jesse Garcia, Paulina Chávez, Rose Portillo, and Thom Nemer are still in it. Matt Lopez wrote the story, and Marvin Lemus (Gentefied) is in charge of making it. The new version is being made by Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Lisa Henson, who all worked on the 2014 movie.
Viorst’s book Alexander came out in 1972, and Ray Cruz did the pictures for it. Alexander Garcia, played by Nemur, has a lot of bad luck in the new movie. When his family begins a road trip to California, he is sure that something bad is going to happen, and when he finds out about a family secret, his worry only gets worse. In the 2014 movie, Alexander was played by Ed Oxenbould, and his parents was played by Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner. Even though reviews were mixed, the movie made more than $100 million and only cost $28 million to make.
Lopez dropped out of the project for no clear reason, but it might have had something to do with his schedule. His new NBC show, Lopez vs. Lopez, is almost done being filmed. Starting this week, there will be three new episodes of the show every Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. ET, which will bring the first season to a close. Lopez vs. Lopez hasn’t been picked up for another season yet. But the time spot after Night Court could give it the boost it needs to get a second season.
Lopez, his daughter Mayan Lopez, and Debby Wolfe made Lopez vs. Lopez. Lopez is the owner of a moving company that goes out of business in the movie. He has to move in with his daughter, Mayan Lopez, but they haven’t been close since she was a teenager. Mayan’s boyfriend, Quinten, is played by Matt Shivey, and Mayan’s son, Chance, is played by Brice Gonzalez. Lopez’s ex-wife Rosie is played by Selenis Leyva (Orange Is the New Black), and comic Al Madrigal plays Oscar. Lopez vs. Lopez and Lopez’s series George Lopez, which ran from 2002 to 2007, can both be watched on Peacock.
