LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – The Stamping Ground Police Department is a two-man department.
Chief Don Whitlock, along with Officer John Giles, work to ensure the safety of their community.
While the city is just about 0.6 square miles, they say they get many calls regarding speeding and other issues.
“It’s a very small community, but it’s a very close-knit community.” Chief Whitlock said.
Chief Whitlock and Officer Giles say the town has four operational Flock Cameras at the moment, but they plan to install their fifth camera soon.
“So pretty much any road you can travel into Stamping Ground will have at least one flock camera on it.” Officer Giles said.
Now, they are looking to add a new device. It’s called the Raven. This device can detect audio, specifically gunshots.
“If a gunshot occurs, they will triangulate between the closest three raven devices and what that does in about 45 to 60 seconds is it pinpoints a 90-foot circumference of where the actual shot originated from. So, we will have a location to go to start the investigation.” Officer Giles said.
They say they would add about 22 or 23 devices, and they would be spread out over a quarter-mile radius around the city limits.
They say there are around 850 people who live in the city, and about half of them are kids who attend their elementary school. They add that they feel this is a good addition to all of their safety measures.
Rather than depending on 911 calls, they say the Raven can give them accurate information quickly.
They say the devices would cost the city around $12,000.
