The Science After Hours event is this Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
BUFFALO, N.Y. — For our Most Buffalo Story of the Day, 2 On Your Side is taking you to summer camp. It’s a summer camp for adults.
Camp Flashback is this Friday night at Tifft Nature Preserve and promises to take you back to your childhood.
“This is the first time that we are doing a retro camp-themed event,” said Gabrielle Graham, the Community Engagement Manger for both the Buffalo Museum of Science and Tifft.
This Friday night, instead of being at the Buffalo Museum of Science, Science After Hours is taking a field trip to the Tifft Nature Preserve.
“We want to take advantage of the beautiful weather and to get people who are used to being at the museum to try a different environment and also just to bring the party to the people that are already here at Tifft,” said Gabrielle Graham.
It’s an adult-only, 21-and-up event.
Gabrielle Graham, the Community Engagement Manger for both the museum and Tifft told us how the idea was born.
“We know that our discovery camps, both at the Science Museum and Tifft, sell out so fast for all the little kiddos, and we thought, you know, I think adults should have some fun, too, so as we were getting into the camp vibe, our staff got to practice making boondoggles, we got our friendship bracelet, our muscle memory back together, and as excited as we are about all of these activities, we know that the people that come and attend the event are also going to have an awesome time,” said Gabrielle Graham.
In addition to crafts, Wild Birds Unlimited of Blasdell will be helping campers make pinecone bird feeders and will give you tips on how to improve your habitat for birds around your house.
“We’re going to be joined by our local experts of the Buffalo Ornithological Society, they’re a research affiliate for the museum, and they are going to help people in identifying some of the birds that you’ll see around Tifft, or by hearing as well,” said Gabrielle Graham.
The science museum camera club will also be there with tips and tricks for taking good nature photos.
If you go, make sure you bring your photo ID since it’s 21 and up and cash.
“The House of Munch food truck will be here with funnel cakes and French fries. They are cash only, so bring some cash if you’re going to feel hungry, and then we also have Chilly Billy Ice Cream for those classic characters on a stick ice cream pops,” said Gabrielle Graham.
They will have activities inside the education center, and if it rains, they can move everything inside.
“If we have clear skies, we’ll have parachutes, giant parachutes out on the lawn. If we’re inside, we’ll use a smaller parachute inside, but walking the trails and using the scavenger hunt, if you’re new to Tifft, if you haven’t been here before, this is a really, really good opportunity to have a low-stakes, fun night out with friends and to get to know one of our in-town nature preserves a little better,” said Gabrielle Graham.
Tickets for Camp Flashback are $25 a person with a discount for Buffalo Museum of Science members.
