RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — High school students are learning hands on skills in the automotive industry.

Wake Tech is hosting its Campus Automotive Repair & Service (CARS) Summer Academy at the Hendrick Automotive Center. The summer camp is for middle and high school students looking to learn more about vehicles. 

“This is our first year piloting a summer camp for students that are in high school and middle school to come in for the full week and get hands on with all of our hybrid, our EV cars, our regular automotive departments,” said Justina Barreiro, Director for the Non-Degree Transportation Program at Wake Tech.

Students are learning all kinds of skills such as how to adjust fluid levels and check engine hoses and belts.

It’s the perfect camp for high school student Hector Serrano.

“I’ve been interested in cars for a long time, but I’ve never actually learned that much about them so I figured this would be a really neat way for me to just go meet new people, also while explaining my knowledge on cars,” said Serrano.

The goal is to hopefully inspire students to pursue a career in the automotive industry. 

“I wanted to come and learn a lot about cars because I’ve been trying to get into that for a while,” said Aidan Zschiedrich. “I want to hopefully go into Nascar or do some Hendrick stuff.”

Instructors say there’s a need for more workers in the automotive industry especially when it comes to electric vehicles.

Barreiro says she’s hoping students can take away other skills too. 

“As new drivers being in high school now, they can check their own fluids, to make sure their car is safe before getting in and driving it,” said Barreiro.

Wake Tech plans to host another summer camp in July for Middle School and High School students in July.
