WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – Mental health has been the backbone of Nami Wisconsin, since starting in the 1970s. The Northwoods chapter is helping adults and children with mental health needs in three counties in our area through in-person support groups.
It’s called Peer Support Groups. Peer Support Groups and Family Support Groups are for anyone who has concerns about their mental health or identifies as living with a mental health condition. During the meetings, you will be able to freely talk in person with one another about your struggles and successes. There will also be an educational activity. You will discuss topics such as anxiety and how to cope with it. The support groups are a way to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness.
“We really think that peer support is a, quite honestly, a big part of the future of treating mental health conditions. It offers support, it helps people stay on track for recovery, there’s been a lot of statistical scientific data about that, and quite honestly, {it} makes sure that people that need support are seen and heard,” said Tracy Johnson, Executive Director at Nami Northwoods.
Nami Wisconsin is offering virtual options as well for those who cannot attend in their area. They are Virtual Support Groups. They offer the same feel as in person, but can offer a different range of opportunities and topics if you are struggling. Some of these groups specifically focus on the LGBTQ community and depression and anxiety. All Nami’s resources are free of charge. They have a mission of helping all who are struggling with a mental health need.
“The more that we normalize these conversations, the more lives we will save quite honestly, and the more people that we can help to be prospering members of our society,” said Johnson.
You can find the resources available through Being Together. A resource by Nami Wisconsin online, it includes a directory of virtual groups you can choose from. Click here to visit the resource.
