At the recently concluded 5th ETAuto Tech Summit, the word ‘innovation’ came up in multiple sessions, but ‘exprovement’ came up in one session – a Masterclass on Navigating and Innovating in a Disruptive Era by eminent scientist and technocrat Dr. R A Mashelkar. The term, a mix of the words exponential and improvement, was coined by Dr. Mashelkar and Hersh Haladker, which also served as the title of a book they co-authored. Exprovement more than improvement is the need of the hour, in this disruptive era!

The Summit, with an umbrella theme of ‘Engineering Sustainable Transitions’, saw SDV as a major discussion topic, which is in tune with the times. Decarbonisation, and sustainability also had their fair share in the two-day Summit on automotive technology and innovation. “There is a need to reinvent the cars as we move towards a carbon neutral world. For this, we need to keep it afresh with software, but that does not take away the importance of mechanical engineering”, said Manu Saale, MD & CEO, Mercedes-Benz R&D India (MBRDI).

At MBRDI, a team of 200 mechanical engineers, all women, are providing key engineering inputs to global projects of Mercedes-Benz, which is trying to redefine the automobile as it becomes highly software defined.

“The software in a modern car is complex. For Tier-1s like us, it becomes an ecosystem play and that is reducing the time-to-market,” said Amit Jain, ED and Group CTO, Uno Minda. As the SDV era progresses, more new dimensions, and possibly challenges and opportunities will also be discovered along the way. D Suresh, Spark Minda’s Group CTO, and CEO, Spark Minda Technical Centre opines that “Maturity of SDVs takes time. It will take at least a decade for the complexity of SDVs to work out.”

Technology can not only redefine the automobile, but also significantly influence the entire ecosystem. In the SDV context, some standardisation and regulatory interventions are being seen as necessary. “A combination of industry standardization and government regulations is required for evolution of the softwarization trend in the auto industry,” says Tarun Aggarwal, Head – Engineering, Maruti Suzuki India.

It’s not only the passenger vehicle that’s getting software defined, two-wheelers (the electric ones) have taken a lead, while commercial vehicles are gradually getting softwarised. “SDVs are important because the pace at which we can update software in vehicles is abysmally slow. The trick in CVs is that SDVs need to deliver and perform capability building exercises,” says Raghavendra Vaidya, MD & CEO, Daimler Truck Innovation Center India.

To get the SDV strategy absolutely right, it’s very important to understand the trend in whole. “SDV is a challenge for everyone to understand. It is not only the technology, but the need for awareness in the OEMs which can get better.” says Bernard Heiming, CTO, TVS Motor Company.

Softwarisation/Digitalisation also can contribute to the world’s journey towards carbon neutrality, at different levels. And, using digital and physical tools, automotive designers have a significant role to play in the sustainability journey. “As vehicle designers keeping a check on ESG and sustainability pathway, ‘less is more’ in all stages of the product life cycle- production, use, disposal,” says Kripa Ananthan, Design Head, Ola Electric.

On the sustainability journey in the context of decarbonisation, it’s going to be a ‘multi-step, multi-year, and multi-fuel’ in nature, says Rajendra Petkar, President and CTO, Tata Motors, and Conference Chair, 5th ETAuto Tech Summit.

Overall, given the challenges faced by the world, Sonam Wangchuk, an innovator, a strong sustainability proponent, and Founder, Himalayan Institute of Alternatives says, “To use is not bad but to misuse is bad.” What would be an ideal car according to him? One which emits oxygen! Crazy idea today perhaps, but could that be a challenge that someone may already be working on?

In the disruptive era we live in, innovation will help, but innovation and ‘exprovement’ together could do wonders. The 6th edition of the ETAuto Tech Summit, scheduled for June 2025, will bring together all key stakeholders to discuss, showcase all the next level of technology and innovation that will contribute to a better industry, and a better world too.
