Meryl Streep Has Been Awarded the Highest Honor in the Spanish Arts

Meryl Streep, who has won three Oscars, got the Princess of Asturias award on Wednesday for her “unforgettable performances” in a career that has lasted more than 50 years.

The 73-year-old actress was praised by the prize committee for “successful performances in which she brings to life richly complex female characters.”

“The honesty and responsibility she brings to her choice of roles, at the service of inspiring and exemplary narratives, reach out beyond the screen,” it said in a statement.

Streep has been in more than 60 movies, playing parts as different as a Nazi concentration camp survivor and a mother who sings ABBA songs.

Her 2012 performance as Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady” earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Before that, she won “Kramer v. Kramer” in 1980 and “Sophie’s Choice” in 1983.

The award of 50,000 euros ($55,000) is one of eight prizes in the arts, science, and other fields that are given out every year by a fund named for the Spanish Crown Princess Leonor.

Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola from the US, Michael Haneke from Austria, and Frank Gehry from the US are all people who have won the art prize in the past.

In October, King Felipe VI of Spain will host an event where the awards will be given out. The ceremony will be shown live on Spanish TV.
