This view of a faraway nebula contains several stars of various hues and sizes. Dust and gas cover the photo in varying densities; but, in the top-center, an oval-shaped section of the image is nearly dust-free, allowing the stars within to shine through.

2. Rho Opiuchi – A popular place for astronomers to study stars

The first site on this journey is the closest, around 390 light-years distant. Astronomers frequently visit Rho Opiuchi to observe the stars. X-rays from Chandra are purple, exposing newborn stars that flash and emit X-rays. Webb’s infrared data includes red, yellow, cyan, and blue.

3. NGC 2467- A oiling cauldron of gas and dust clouds sprinkled with bright blue hot young stars

Bright blue stars are strewn among a dense landscape of orange and yellow gas and dust clouds. Some of the stars are very bright and feature four diffraction spikes, while others are slightly dimmer. The clouds obscure most of space’s darkness.

4. Galaxy NGC 7250

A star, slightly left of center, glows brightly with a white-yellow light against a background of galaxies. Diffraction spikes, which are eight lengthy spikes on the star, are anomalies seen in imaging. A galaxy with stars and clouds of gas and dust can be seen to the star’s right. A portion of the galaxy has bluish light in it. A star, slightly left of center, glows brightly with a white-yellow light against a background of galaxies. Thousands of stars and vast regions of dust and gas are seen in this deep space image. At the center of the image is a central star cluster, with a surrounding nebula on either side. At the top right corner is a small cluster of dark clouds called “Bok” globules.⁣ ⁣

6. Remnants of a su-su-su-supernova explosion 160,000 light-years away

A translucent cherry red glob hovers in a dark sky filled with glittering white and gold stars. The shiny form is bordered with thin, opaque red lines. Inside the supernova remnant, there is a wispy ring of grey clouds tinged green, blue, and purple.

7. Waning gibbous moon

The Sun’s rays give the Moon, top center, a brownish-gray appearance. It contrasts with the great blackness of space beyond it. The lower third of the photo reveals a blue haze, which is the Earth’s atmosphere. Finally, a blanket of white clouds covers the entire bottom of the image.
