John West Park offers a playground, exercise equipment, pavilion and entertainment including concerts and movie nights.

Ocean View Police Chief Kenneth McLaughlin will be among those sitting in a dunk tank Friday evening at John West Park, as part of festivities planned for Classic Movie Night, where the theme — and the movie — will be “Field of Dreams,” starring Kevin Costner.

Planned for 6 p.m. on July 26, the evening will have a baseball theme, Town Manager Carol Houck said.

McLaughlin will be in the tank from 6:15 to 6:30 p.m.

Also in the tank, waiting to see if guests have fastballs suitable for knocking them into the water, will be Lord Baltimore Elementary School gym teacher Mark Banks, 6 to 6:15 p.m.; Ocean View Brewing Company Head Brewer Taylor Smith, 6:30 to 6:45 p.m.; School Resource Officer Rhys Bradshaw, 6:45 to 7 p.m.; K-9 Officer Justin Hopkins, 7 to 7:15 p.m.; and businessman Stephen Soules, 7:15 to 7:30 p.m.

Chances at the dunk tank will be by donation, as will the chance to see how fast guests can pitch and whether they can hit a baseball. Funds donated will be used for OVPD K-9 training and equipment.

Houck said town leaders would like to see $3,000 raised.

Ori, one of the Ocean View Police Department’s K-9 dogs, will be at Classic Movie Night. There will be K-9 demonstrations, and K-9s from other police agencies are also expected to attend.

Photos can also be taken beside a large cut-out of one of the actors in the film, and guests will be able to enjoy freshly popped popcorn as the movie begins at 8:30 p.m.

Sherman the Shorebird, the mascot from the Delmarva Shorebirds baseball team in Salisbury, Md., will also be there.

A beer garden will be open, selling cans of beer for $6 each, and Ocean View Family Restaurant will sell menu items.

“This Classic Movie Night is shaping up to be another great night at John West Park. It will allow the community to fund and support in a fun way our police K-9 program. We can’t thank Ocean View Brewing enough for the donation of nine cases of beer for the beer garden,” Houck said.

“Field of Dreams,” released in 1989, is about Ray — a farmer who receives the message that is now a classic one-liner: “If you build it, they will come.” So, he does. He builds a baseball field in the middle of a corn field in Iowa, and they do come.

“We are hoping to get 300 people, in that range, to attend. It will be fun to be able to come and dunk the chief of police and your gym teacher or school resource officer, so we are going to be playing that up. We are hoping to make it a nice family event,” Houck said.
