SALISBURY, Md. – A non-profit organization that has helped make art students’ dreams come true for decades is dissolving. However, organizers say they already have plans in place to ensure that those dreams live on.

“Time to go home,”

The Cavallaro and Cleary Visual Art Foundation (CCART) has awarded close to $200,000 over 25 years, says president and co-founder Marie Cavallaro. Cavallaro and John Cleary are both professors of art emeriti at Salisbury University (SU).

“We have done this for 25 years, but it’s time to go home and leave it to the Art Department at Salisbury University,” Cavallaro said. “Students now coming into Salisbury University are eligible to apply for the scholarship.”

CCART scholarships will continue to be awarded annually to students choosing SU’s Visual Art Program through the Salisbury University Foundation.

“It will live forever because this really was my baby,” Cavallaro said. “John and I have put a lot of time and effort into it. I just wanted it to live on, and this just fell into place.”

YART SALE

As CCART prepares to transfer the scholarships to the care of the SU Foundation, the organization is holding a “YART SALE.”

The Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore is hosting the one-day event on September 28th from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the East Park Professional Center, 1324 Belmont Avenue, Suite 401 in Salisbury.

Donated original artwork, craftworks, and other works by regional artists will be on sale, for up to 75% off. Prices will range from $10 to $10,000 for pottery, paintings, prints, photos, and other works of art. Panels, pedestals, easels, frames, art supplies, and more will also be available at reduced prices.

Art is Essential

Cavallaro says since CCART’s first $300 award in 1988, the local art community has flourished. She hopes that that growth continues, saying that art is essential.

“The fine arts have become really strong because of the two universities here. They have fine arts at [the University of Maryland Eastern Shore] and SU. It’s grown so much,” Cavallaro said. “We need to have a little color in our life, and shapes and forms. Without art, there is no table, no chairs, no anything, because it all comes off of a drafting table.”
