AIPT Television podcast episode 39: An immigrant journey and ‘Darna’ with Andrew Drilon

The AIPT Television podcast continues its celebration of Filipino American History month with our latest guest. Andrew Drilon has made a name for himself in his native country of the Philippines. He’s received the Neil Gaiman Graphic/Fiction award for his comic Lines and Spaces. He also won the Manila Critics Circle National Book Award for his first book, Kare-Kare Komiks. He is now breaking into the American comics scene having published in SHAZAM! Fury of the Gods Special: Shazamly Matters and DC Pride 2023.

We cover a number of topics during our conversation with Andrew. He describes when he first noticed the comics medium as a young boy along with his self-publishing exploits while still in high school. Later, he opens up about his experiences immigrating to the United States and the hardships he experienced all to pursue a career in art.

Then, because we are a TV podcast, we breakdown the pilot episode of the Filipino superhero series, Darna (2022), starring Jane De Leon in the titular role. The story follows a young girl who protects her city from corruption and crime by using a stone that transforms her into her superpowered alter ego. Darna was created by Mars Revelo and Nestor Redondo, and you can think of the character as the combination of Wonder Woman, Superman, and Shazam.
