JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – With distinctive facial hair and rugged blues-driven guitar work, this iconic band is ready to rock an area venue.
ZZ Top, with special guest The Sedonas, will perform as part of “The Elevation Tour,” at 8 p.m. Tuesday at 1st Summit Arena @ Cambria County War Memorial in downtown Johnstown.
“These guys are Rock & Roll Hall of Famers and legends, and it’s really exciting to get them to come into the city and our stage here to perform for our local fans,” said Chad Mearns, marketing and box office manager at 1st Summit Arena.
“I know it’s going to be a great night for everybody in the building.”
ZZ Top has been around for over half a century, delivering rock, blues and boogie on the road and in the studio to millions of devoted fans.
With iconography as distinctive as their sound, ZZ Top is virtually synonymous with beards, hotrod cars, spinning guitars and that magic keychain, all of which transcend geography and language.
It was in Houston in the waning days of 1969 that ZZ Top coalesced from the core of two rival bands, Billy Gibbons’ Moving Sidewalks and Frank Beard and Dusty Hill’s American Blues.
Their third album, 1973’s “Tres Hombres” catapulted them to national attention with the hit “La Grange,” which is still one of the band’s signature pieces.
“Eliminator,” their 1983 album was a paradigm shift for ZZ Top. Their roots blues skew was intact, but added to the mix were tech-age trappings that soon found a visual outlet with such tracks as “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Legs” on MTV. It was one of the music industry’s first albums to have been certified Diamond, and a reflection of U.S. domestic sales exceeding 10 million units.
“This is going to be a fantastic show of rock ‘n’ roll with songs that you know, songs that are classics and some songs that you didn’t even know were theirs but you know them by heart,” Mearns said.
“ZZ Top is a band that’s been around for many years, and has put out such great music that people are going to have a good time even if they come only knowing a few songs.”
As a touring entity, ZZ Top has performed before millions of fans on four continents, and have been the subject of their Grammy-nominated documentary, “That Little Ol’ Band from Texas.”
The band has released 15 studio albums and sold an estimated 50 million records worldwide.
“It’s all about the music, and people are going to hear some great musicians and some great rock ‘n’ roll,” Mearns said.
“ZZ Top’s appeal transcends one genre, so this is a show for anybody who enjoys music, concerts and getting out and having a good time.”
He said interest in the show has been good since it was announced.
“We’ve got a big crowd that we’re expecting, but there are tickets still available and some great seats that we just released to the public,” Mearns said.
