Another Springfield area business has stepped up to help the automotive technology program at Ozarks Technical Community College.

Springfield Nissan Kia recently made a six-figure donation — the exact amount was not disclosed — to become the college’s newest automotive and transportation partner.

A naming ceremony to celebrate the partnership was held Aug. 20.

John Widiger, managing partner at Springfield Nissan Kia, said the partnership made sense because of the important role Ozarks Tech plays developing the next generation of automotive workers.

“Whether it is in service, parts, sales or auto body, this industry gives individuals the ability to provide for their families and thrive financially,” Widiger said in a news release. “We are happy to support all OTC does to help to spread these opportunities for success.”

Along with Springfield Nissan Kia, area businesses that support the program help the college provide up-to-date technology and assist students facing barriers not related to academics.

Gabe McLaughlin, automotive technology department chair at Ozarks Tech, said the support makes a difference.

“Issues with childcare, transportation and food insecurity can have a big impact on student success, and we are grateful this contribution from Springfield Nissan Kia will help assist students so they can complete their degree or certificate and find valuable employment opportunities in the transportation industry,” he said in the release.

The department offers auto collision repair, automotive technology and diesel technology programs. The programs can be tailored to help students acquire specialized skills for the jobs they want.
