Donnell Rawlings
Comedian and actor Donnell Rawlings is best known for his work on “Chappelle’s Show,” and he also had a role on “The Wire,” as well as numerous other movies, TV shows and documentary appearances. His comedy specials range from 2010’s “From Ashy to Classy” on Comedy Central to this year’s Netflix show “A New Day,” produced by Dave Chappelle. Louis Michot
Fiddler Louis Michot, frontman of the Grammy-winning Lost Bayou Ramblers, released his debut solo album “Rêve Du Troubadour” a year ago. He marks the anniversary with a multi-media revisitation of the work. He’s joined by frequent collaborator, accordionist and zydeco artist Corey Ledet for a performance with video projections and subtitles in English for French language songs. ‘Hairspray’
Tracy Turnblad has her heart set on dancing on the “Corny Collins Show,” but trouble at school, problems with the popular crowd and more stand in her way in “Hairspray.” John Waters’ film-turned-hit-musical is set in his native Baltimore in the early 1960s as the times are changing. Rivertown Theaters for the Performing Arts presents the show at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, and Saturday, Sept. 14, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15. It continues Sept. 20-29. Rapper Kr3wcial and DJ and producer Ghazi Gamali perform at the next installment of Couches, a monthly listening room experience. HUMP! — Part Two
Advice columnist and writer Dan Savage started the HUMP! Film Fest to invite amateur pornographers to make films about what they really liked and wanted to see on screen. The annual showcase has a diverse array of sexualities, body types, kinks and more, all films lasting five minutes or less. There were so many submissions for 2024 that HUMP! Released them in two parts. The second one has 25 new films ranging from not-the-typical-pizza-delivery premise to pansexual picnics, foot fetishists, leather and other themes. Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra
The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra opens its season with “Symphonie Fantastique,” highlighted by LSU professor Brian Raphael Nabors’ “Pulse.” The program also includes Dukas’ “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” and Berlioz’s “Symphonie Fantastique.” At 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12 at The Orpheum Theater. ‘School of Rock: The Musical’
Dewey Finn crashes the short distance from being in a band to being broke in “School of Rock.” He impersonates a substitute teacher at an elite private school to make some quick cash and finds the curriculum severely lacking in the classics: Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC and more. But the musical version of the movie features music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Jazz bassist Jake Noble releases his debut album “Letting Go of a Dream,” a project that began as a tribute to his musical influences and evolved into a journey of self-discovery and acceptance.
