New York Fashion Week has just wrapped, and the one piece of clothing we saw repeatedly on showgoers was Bermuda shorts. Jorts, jean shorts, whatever you call them, the bigger the better. And they’re even easier to bring into fall. To show you how to dress them up, Cut fashion director Jessica Willis has taken her most worn pair and styled a look that is functional, edgy, and timeless. Here’s the breakdown.

Start with baggy shorts

“I like these because the color makes them feel a little more dressy, so you can dress them up or down,” Willis says of the pair from Haikure. The ultrasoft denim from the Japanese brand has a pressed seam throughout the front that gives it more structure and shape. She sized up for a looser fit that she can wear lower on the waist.
Grab your shorts as often as you’d grab your Levi’s 501s. When it gets colder, throw these on with boots with a tighter fit on the leg that hit just at the calf. Shorts that hit right below the knee are ideal for elongating the leg.

“I have a shorter torso, so my trick is to wear a bodysuit or tuck in my shirt to elongate my legs,” she says. The tighter the top, the more emphasis you’ll put on the shape and bagginess of your shorts. (You can also achieve this effect with a baby tee.)
She opted for a bodysuit that’s also a swimsuit from Toteme that’s a party in the back with a low back and strappy details. “I like to play with the feminine and masculine,” she explains.

Pile on some of your favorite pieces: “Bolder accessories make the look more dressed up and feminine,” says Willis. She mixed structured gold pieces from her go-to brands Cartier and Tabayer. “I love this Cartier watch because it’s kind of like a bracelet and you can easily stack it with bracelets or bangles,” she explains. “It’s an investment, but it’s timeless.

Also making a statement, a quilted Chanel bag with gold chain and pearl details. It’s perfect for daytime ventures where you need just the essentials and a few extras like sunglasses, hand sanitizer, and perfume. As always, Willis’s philosophy is not to save your fancy bags just for fancy occasions, and this Chanel bag really makes the look.

Lastly, the shoes. They’re a standout pair from Khaite with a silhouette that complements the look instead of overpowering it. It’s a maximalist snake print, but the design is minimal. “It’s a little more interesting than a white shoe, and the texture plays against the bag.” Instead of heels, you could just as easily wear this with loafers or ballet flats.
