Lawton Drag Entertainment contends with threats as they try to raise money for VFW

LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – Lawton Drag Entertainment held its second annual VFW Benefit show on Sept. 7. However, before the show, the organization was the target of hate comments on social media and alleged threats.

Ariel Monroe, a performer and Co-Founder of Lawton Drag Entertainment said calls were made to Post 5263 with threats of protest and violence, claiming some members were told to ‘Hang themselves from trees.’

“The level of hate and actual call to violence we’ve never seen until this show,” Monroe said.

As Lawton Drag Entertainment prepared for the benefit performance, they were also met with opposition from a few Veterans who saw their ads on Facebook.

“I know we normally get the normal, ‘This goes against God,’ ‘Y’all should be ashamed, this is offensive to veterans who have served.’ We’ve gotten those comments occasionally, but this past show, this past benefit, it was, ‘Well, I hope this place gets bombed,” Monroe said,

Lawton Drag Entertainment said these calls pushed a lower turnout at their benefit show.

However, as a veteran who spent time on Fort Sill and a member of the VFW Post, Monroe said she’s thankful to have the support of Post leadership.

“‘The VFW has become a sanctuary of comradery for those seeking a sense of belonging and connection,” a statement from board member Randy Traxler read. “It’s members, veterans who have selflessly defended our freedoms, have created a welcoming environment where people can get together, share their stories and find solace’”

Traxler mentions that Lawton Drag Entertainment is the only organization in the past two years to raise funds for the Post.

Monroe said the opposition’s response to the event speaks on their character.

“If that is enough for them to want to condemn this VFW and condemn the support and amazing work that they’ve done for Veterans everywhere then I would ask them to do a little soul searching,” Monroe said.
