Join the parade: African heritage shines at Iowa City’s new festival

The inaugural African Festival of Arts and Culture is taking place in Iowa City on Saturday, Sept. 28, from noon to 9 p.m. at the Pedestrian Mall.

Sunday Goshit, co-chair of the festival’s planning committee, said the free event will showcase the vibrant cultural heritage of African communities in Iowa through music, dance, food and art.

Organized by local African groups and organizations, the festival’s goal is to celebrate diversity and unity.

Goshit said there are performances, a parade of nations fashion show, and vendors offering African clothing, art, and food.
