KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee women’s tennis completed a stellar singles slate and executed well in doubles to cap off day two of the UT Home Invitational. The squad put together six singles wins and two doubles victories on Saturday at Barksdale Stadium.
Matches got underway with singles action as Esther Adeshina, Lauren Anzalotta, Catherine Aulia, Sofia Cabezas, Eleonora Molinaro and Elza Tomase all tallied wins.
Adeshina got things started with a pair of 6-2 wins over Madeline Atway. Aulia defeated Dani Schoenly 6-0 and 6-3, while Cabezas put up two 6-3 wins against Luciana Perry. Anzalotta downed Audrey Spencer 6-3 and 6-4, while Tomase collected her first singles win of the tournament against Shelly Bereznyak, 6-2 and 6-4. Also adding a win was Molinaro versus Akanksha Bahn, 6-3 and 6-1. Alana Wolfberg took Teah Chavez into three sets but came up short, falling 6-3, 1-6 and 6-3.
“I’m really proud of our team for how we competed from start to finish today,” said head coach Alison Ojeda. “I have a lot of respect for opponents who are willing to go toe to toe with their competition for as long as it takes.”
After singles action was completed, Tennessee collected two more wins in the doubles category to finish the day. It was smooth sailing for Tomase and Aulia as they took down Bella Chhiv and Leena Bennetto, 6-1. Also adding a win was the duo of Anzalotta and Wolberg as they defeated Maialen Morante and Ellie Myers with a 6-2 victory. Adeshina and Cabezas fought until the end but were defeated by Lizzy Steven and Makayla Mills. The 6-6 match ended with a 7-5 tiebreaker loss.
“Our team is mature, so I’m confident we will bring the energy tomorrow morning for a 9 a.m. start,” Ojeda added.
Tennessee returns to the courts tomorrow for the final day of the UT Home Invitational. Singles matches start at 9 a.m. ET and doubles will follow at 10 a.m. ET at Barksdale Stadium.
