Art for autumn: The Ubyssey’s October arts and culture calendar


Your coursework may be ramping up, but so are arts and culture events around Vancouver, especially on campus — and you deserve a break (or maybe you don’t, but who cares).

Whether you want to catch a few bands at the Biltmore or chill to some classical music at the Chan Centre, there’s something for everyone, all for under $15.

VERSUS (October 9, doors at 7 p.m., Biltmore Cabaret)

In Blank Vinyl Project’s annual battle of the bands, six groups duke it out for a coveted spot in the Goosehunt 2025 lineup. Audience members will have the chance to vote for their favourite band!

$15 + fees for non-members, 19+ event

UBC Bands is opening its season with performances from Concert Winds and the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, led by conductors Meijun Chen and Scott MacLennan.

$8 for students

In this workshop, participants will create personalized scrapbooks and journals that capture their cultural values and memories, and highlight the importance of centring care and community.

Vancouver Outsider Arts Festival (October 11–13, Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre)

The eighth annual Vancouver Outsider Arts Festival will feature events and exhibitions by visual and performing artists from all over Metro Vancouver who self-identify as “outsiders” those who often face physical, social or economic barriers to showing their work in mainstream spaces, or came to art via non-traditional means.

Free admission, RSVP required

BIPOC (students or not) are invited to CiTR for an evening to slow down and heal through spiritual practices like tarot, reiki, sound healing, journalling, qigong and meditation.

UBC Apple Festival (October 19 & 20, 11 a.m.–4 p.m., UBC Botanical Garden)

UBC Botanical Garden’s Apple Festival is back! In addition to over 33,000 pounds of apples for sale (all locally grown in British Columbia), it’s got lots of apple-themed events in store — including food vendors, cooking demonstrations and the famous Tasting Tent.

$11 online until festival dates, $12 at the door

UBC’s language programs will be screening their favourite spooky movies from around the world at the newly-reopened Norm Theatre. Most events are free and offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and costumes are encouraged!
