4A girls tennis: Broughton’s Harris wins singles; Apex Friendship sisters win doubles

Wake County made its presence felt at the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A girls tennis championships on Saturday.

Broughton’s Allison Harris claimed the singles title with a lengthy match against Jordan’s Samantha Slowik, winning 2-6, 6-1, 6-2. It is the second straight year Slowik has been runner-up.

Harris marks Broughton’s 16th time winning an individual championship and is the 10th singles champion. The Capitals are now tied for the most singles champs by a single school. She’s the first Capitals player to win either singles or doubles since Maggie Kane won the 4A singles title in 2012.

Meanwhile in doubles, Apex Friendship has won the 4A crown for the second straight year. Last season, Julianne Izod teamed up with Riley Jennings. This year, Julianne Izod was joined by younger sister Carolyn Izod.

The Izods needed a first-set tiebreaker to help defeat Leesville Road’s Mia Caruana and Dianna Higgins 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.

The first and second rounds of the NCHSAA 4A individual championships were played Friday, and semifinals and finals were Saturday at Millbrook Exchange Park in Raleigh.

In doubles, all four regional champions were semifinalists, with the pairs from Leesville Road (4A East), and Apex Friendship (4A Mideast) joining Myers Park’s Ann Mason Moore and Agnes Shinn (4A West) as well as Marvin Ridge’s Jeslyn and Eleri Pratiknjo (4A Midwest).

In singles, Harris represented as the 4A East regional champ and Slowik the champ of the Mideast. Myers Park’s Teagan Reilly, the 4A West champ also made it to semifinals. Sophia Catino of New Hanover was the only non-regional champ to make it semifinals, taking out Midwest champ Faith Valentine of Lake Norman in the second round.
