Victoria ISD nutrition team joins Texas Farm Fresh Challenge

VICTORIA, Texas – The Victoria ISD Child Nutrition Department will be participating in the Texas Department of Agriculture’s 2023 Farm Fresh Challenge throughout the month of October.

Local products will enhance the VISD nutrition team’s menus, providing students with opportunities to learn about agriculture in Texas. This effort is part of Commissioner Miller’s Texas Farm Fresh Initiative, which encourages schools and care centers to incorporate Texas products into their meals and snacks.

“The Farm Fresh Challenge is a wonderful opportunity for VISD to support local Texan farmers and provide our students with nutritious meals,” said Randall Meyer, interim superintendent of VISD. “By sourcing locally, we not only contribute to the local economy but also educate our students about the importance of local agriculture. It’s a win-win situation that promotes healthy eating habits and community involvement.”

By sourcing food locally, VISD retains purchasing power within the state and supports local farmers. The Farm Fresh Challenge seeks to raise community awareness about the benefits of buying local, contributing to both a healthier lifestyle and the local economy.

A variety of Texas-grown fruits and vegetables will be offered at all 22 VISD schools.
