Full Circle Nine gallery features ‘These are my people’ exhibition

The Full Circle Nine Gallery will feature artist Sarah Rae Cote in “These are my people” as part of the First Friday Art Tour from 6-9 p.m. on Nov. 1.

Cote is an Indy native and studied sociology, psychology, anthropology and communication. Cote’s work is characterized by bright paint colors and outlines of faces she sees in the crowds of coffee shops or pubs. As she describes, she finds herself walking around crowds with sketchbooks or canvases, finding inspiration from those around her.

“In a way, it’s being social without being social,” Cote said. “I enjoy drawing contour lines of people. They can be especially blind contour when the subjects are in motion, dancing and enjoying themselves. Sometimes, I, too, am dancing as I draw them. I love that the simple execution of a scribble can capture the essence of a person or moment, and occasionally it will make me giggle with delight as I survey the room.”

Cote learned blind contour drawing, where the artists draw a subject without looking at the paper, at a class at Herron in 1999.

“I’ve been doing them so long that they don’t look as abstract anymore,” Cote said.

Admission and parking for the exhibit at Full Circle Nine Gallery is free. The gallery is at 1125 Brookside Ave. in the South Studios section of Factory Arts North. The gallery is open 12-4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
