The Skin Nerd: The newest TikTok beauty trends — and the products worth checking out

Collagen is essential for a plump, youthful looking complexion.

Unfortunately, our natural reserves get depleted with age.

We can then look to boost our reserves with targeted supplements or, for more instantaneous results, seek topical collagen-infused skincare such as collagen masks.

Now, you need to be realistic when it comes to expectations from a collagen mask — it won’t plump up your skin for the long-term, but it will help to give you a lifted, bouncy complexion fast and for a limited amount of time.

This makes a collagen mask perfect pre-party or for a special event.

Winged eyeliner

Some of us have spent decades perfecting the art of the winged eye, but this classic style never seems to get old.

Now, the eyeliner trend has been cropping up in many of the top #GRWM (get ready with me) videos.

Ideal for elongating small peepers and adding a touch of glamour to your look. For a sharp, precise, line I recommend liquid eyeliner.

Ectoin

Ectoin has been labelled 2024’s hottest skincare ingredient.

This versatile barrier-boosting ingredient help keep skin hydrated and reduces inflammation for more resilient skin.

Setting spray

There is something super satisfying about spritzing your face with a setting spray post glow-up.

Undoubtedly, trends like glass skin accelerated the demand for setting spray — which offers a more natural, dewy but bespoke finish compared to powder. It also helps to avoid any cakiness!

Setting sprays are available in many formats, including mattifying, glow-enhancing and long-wear, with many comprising skincare ingredients to boost your complexion as you mist.

Peel-off lip stain

The most interesting and currently trending way to create a defined pout is with a peel-off lip stain.

According to data by research agency Spate, peel-off lip stains are the leading trend in the lip stain category — with many creators praising results.

Peel-off lip stains offer wearers much desired longevity and are also easy to use, helping to minimise smudging and ‘bleeding’ risks.

Skunk highlights

Ever reminisce about the early noughties’ days of two-tone tresses?

Me neither, but the data doesn’t lie and there has been an average of 3,600 monthly searches for the Skunk hair colour trend, which features colouring hair two contrasting shades (one light, one dark — like a skunk!)

Not one for the faint-hearted but done right, it can look bold and beautiful.

Kojic acid

If you haven’t heard of kojic acid, you may start to notice it cropping up more now as kojic acid-based serums have been tipped to become a must when it comes to addressing uneven skin tone and hyper-pigmentation.

Kojic acid helps to fight dark spots and can help to lighten scars, visible sun damage, and scarring.

Try: SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense Serum, €115, skinshop.ie

Gourmand scents

Gourmand scents include cherry, vanilla, almond, and caramel — think of the kind of smells you would find in a sweet shop.

Though some would be put off by the thought of smelling too sweet, many of these fragrances are far more sophisticated and wearable than you would expect.

I particularly like those with a vanilla scent.

Texture

When it comes to locks, texture reigns supreme.

Data from Spate reveals that texturising hair powder is currently trending, with an average of 14,900 monthly searches and a 152.3% growth in searches compared to last year.

Spate also revealed that searches for clay pomade have also been rising, averaging 2,900 monthly searches.

Today versus Payday… Blemish patches

Today: Acnecide Purifide Power Patches, €12.50, available from pharmacies nationwide.

Acnecide invisible blemish patches are fab for helping to tackle emerging spots or early-stage blemishes that look red and feel uncomfortable to touch.

Featuring three-in-one technology — including salicylic acid — to help shrink the appearance of blemishes, results are visible in four hours.

I love that these also include soothing Canadian willowherb and centella asiatica to reduce the appearance of redness.

Payday: Hero Mighty Pimple Patches Invisible+, €18.99, boots.ie

Suitable for all ages and sensitive skin, Mighty Patch Invisible+ is a lightweight, clear hydrocolloid patch that is surprisingly comfortable.

Made from medical-grade hydrocolloid, these patches help to cover up blemishes, helping you avoid picking, squeezing, and touching, and helping the spot clear up more quickly.
