WASHINGTON (7News) — Maybe you know LeVar Burton for his roles in Star Trek or Roots, or even saw him read books in the PBS series Reading Rainbow. But on Tuesday, the world-famed actor appeared in D.C. for a different reason.
Burton, who’s also an environmental conservation activist, visited youth at the D.C. Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services’ Oasis Program, receiving a tour of the program’s campus near Fort Meade.

“This campus is a dream come true forthe corps in terms of having a learning space where the work can be done,” Burton told 7News. “What we’ve done is created infrastructure for service to reclaim lives of youth with the environment.”
The DC Youth Leadership Oasis Program is a 16-week program for youth to learn about the environment and themselves through mentorship, civic engagement, and exposure to new experiences. The program’s primary goal though is to help reduce the risk of youth’s contact with the juvenile justice system, according to program officials.
Burton is on the Board of Directors for the Earth Conservation Corps, a group that said it’s working to protect the Anacostia River by supporting youth through conservation and leadership programs.
