Shooting at Salem apartment complex leads to car chase and two fatalities, including suspect

At approximately 6:25 a.m. Sunday, Salem Police responded to multiple calls of shots fired at an apartment complex in the 4000 block of Liberty Road South.

Officials tell KATU News that witnesses reported hearing an argument and then the sound of gunfire with a person fleeing the scene in a vehicle. Police say one man died from a gunshot wound at the complex.

A responding officer found and followed the suspect vehicle traveling southbound on Commercial Street Southeast, officials said.

The vehicle crashed through the property of two businesses in the 4700 block of Commercial Street, police say.

KATU’s Christina Giardinelli says the vehicle crashed into the sign at the Jack In The Box restaurant with the car ending up near the drive-thru lane.

Police say the driver was found deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

This is a developing story and KATU News will have more information shortly.
