CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. – The Explorers found a way to fin against a tough Providence team with Tatum Johnson scoring the game-tying goal with 14 seconds left in regulation and Zhao Rodrigo getting it done in the shootout.
La Salle finished the year 13-5 overall, 5-2 in conference. They now shift focus to the Atlantic 10 playoffs this week and their matchup against the Saint Joseph’s Hawks on Thursday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Friars struck early in the contest with a goal from Lily Procaccianti early in the second frame.
- From that point on the Explorers locked the Providence offense down.
- The Friars were only able to get off four shots the entire rest of the game.
- La Salle had continual offensive pressure during the contest, including 15 penalty corners throughout the game.
- A final effort to tie the game up proved to be successful late in the game. Tatum Johnson found an opportunity in the winding seconds and put a shot in the back of the cage.
- La Salle was able to continue their offensive pressure throughout both overtime periods. Combined the Explorers had eight penalty corner opportunities, three to end the second overtime period.
- The shootout was headlined by both team’s goalies. Only three goals were scored in the shootout, and for La Salle both of the goals came from Zhao Rodrigo.
- The junior was methodical in both goals scored and lured the goalie to sleep before putting the ball past her and into the net.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- La Salle had 15 penalty corners, opposite 0 from the Friars.
- Emily Streib only allowed one goal in the shootout period, holding strong for a majority of it.
- The Explorers had 20 shots, 11 of them on goal, Clara Larripa led the way with seven shots of her own.
- Johnson got off three shots, one of them being the game-tying goal late in the game.
