Apollo Art Club students get creative with artwork on Snowplow

Apollo High School Art Club Students are hard at work with Paint the Plow, a program hosted by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to promote safe driving during Kentucky’s snowy winter season. Students who participate learn the importance of staying safe on the roads in the upcoming winter season.

The students were excited to brainstorm design ideas. They ultimately went with an image showcasing Apollo High School, featuring a fire, snow, and their Eagle mascot enjoying a cup of hot cocoa. Once the design was approved, the students got to work.

“I think it’s made me, in general, appreciate public art more, and I think especially in the odder ways, if you will,” said Ashlyn Brown, Apollo Art Club vice president. “A snowplow is a unique and even interesting way to show off artwork.”

Jillian Sparks, visual arts teacher and co-sponsor of Apollo Art Club, said it will be meaningful for the students’ hard work and creativity to be highlighted throughout the community when the snow season comes.

“We’re teaching them that they could do something as small as painting a plow, and their name can get out there, their work can get out there. They’re showing that we are available and that the kids are doing something really good here,” Sparks said. “We’re getting Apollo High School out there because we have a saying that things are done right at 2280.”

The members of Apollo’s Art Club encourage the community to drive by the back parking lot at AHS and see what they are accomplishing on their new canvas until this upcoming Tuesday, and be sure to watch for the one-of-a-kind snowplow this winter.

“I’m really proud of it,” said Elizabeth Layson, Apollo Art Club student. “I’m glad they chose us to be able to paint the snowplow this year. It’s something I’ve never been a part of so it’s really fun knowing that tons of people are going to see my art. I hope they get the idea that slow in the snow is really important.”
