Dan Gilbert’s latest development in downtown Detroit will have an entertainment experience unlike any other in the region. Cosm Detroit will give sports and entertainment fans a virtual seat to events all over the world.
It will be the anchor for the Development at Cadillac Square (once the Monroe Blocks), where plans have shifted over the years. The development received an extension from the Downtown Development Authority earlier this year, and is expected to break ground in 2025.
It will be located next to the Cadillac Square Building, and in the renderings, we still see the advertisements that are prominently displayed on the side of that building.
Cosm calls its concept a shared reality experience. The screens, sounds, and environment will bring its guests together in a way that makes it feel like they’re at the event – or pretty close to being there. Say the Lions make the SuperBowl – you’d have the game, the sounds, the hospitality experience, and the crowd to cheer along with.
“Cosm is the future of sports and entertainment, putting people in the front row of the world’s biggest events. This was a transformative technology and experience that we knew we had to bring to Detroit, and we can’t wait for everyone to experience it firsthand,” said Dan Gilbert, Chairman and Founder, Bedrock. “As just the fourth location in the world, Cosm Detroit will be the anchor of our Development at Cadillac Square, and a magnet to bring people to downtown to experience the energy and vibrance in our city.”
This will be the fourth location for the venue in the United States, along with L.A., Dallas, and Atlanta (currently in the works).
Cosm has partnerships with the NBA, UFC, TNT Sports, NBC Sports, ESPN, FOX Sports, and the NFL. It will also bring elevated entertainment experiences; recently it’s hosted a production of Cirque du Soleil’s “O”, along with immersive art experiences. The venue would have a 26.6 meter 12K+ LED dome, and according to a press release, “gastropub-style fare, craft cocktails, and a curated beer selection.”
Detroit-based Rossetti will be leading the design of the new venue.
According to Crain’s, this will replace the previously announced entertainment venue in the development, due to the Music Hall’s new concert venue downtown. Cosm would seat around 500 in the dome, with room for another 1,500 through the venue. Cosm Detroit could open in 2026.
