BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Binghamton men’s tennis had several strong performances at its home NateRentals.com Mock Duals held this weekend at the Lane-Starke Tennis Center. Three three-day event featured singles and doubles matches with NJIT, Army and Monmouth. Play was held outdoors Friday and indoors Saturday and Sunday.
Sophomore William Morais Binnie led five Bearcats who all finished 2-1 in singles play. One of Binnie’s wins was a 4-6, 6-0, 12-10 victory over NJIT standout Pablo Perez Ramos, a regionally-ranked player who earlier this fall advanced to the Round of 16 at the ITA Super Regionals. Also finishing with two singles wins were junior Kyle Weekes, sophomore Ronin Lotlikar and freshmen Filipe Costa and Matt Carlson.
Weekes and Costa continued their unbeaten fall with a 2-0 mark in doubles. The pair improved to 3-0 this fall.
“We played a lot of tennis this weekend and got the freshmen a little bit more a sense of how the dual matches will go in the spring,” head coach Nick Zieziula said. “We didn’t put together as many complete doubles matches as we would have liked but we challenged the guys with mixing pairs a lot and that was helpful to explore some options for the spring. We’ve grown a lot on our willingness to move over the middle and close the net which will help us particularly as we move forward into the indoor season.
“We had flashes of brilliance in singles on the weekend. In particular Will and Filipe have really added some tools to their games in the last few weeks and those started to show up in matches. Still some work to do on maintaining our focus from match to match and avoiding some drop offs but we’ve got one more weekend to go for working on that in the fall. We really appreciate all three of our sponsors, NateRentals.com, Big Zues BBQ and LG&T Law for supporting both of our home events this fall and helping us to bring in some great competition at home.”
Binghamton won 20 combined matches on the weekend, 12 singles and eight doubles.
The Bearcats conclude their fall slate at the Navy Gold Invitational on Nov. 10-12 in Annapolis.
