  • Toyota’s RAV-X is on display at the SEMA Show, highlighting future crossover potential.

Toyota revealed the RAV-X concept, a crossover built for off-road performance, at the 2024 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Developed by Toyota’s Service Parts and Accessories Development (SPAD) division, the RAV-X explores the possibility of transforming the RAV4 into a performance-oriented vehicle for adventurous off-road use.

The RAV-X is part of Toyota’s vision to bring high-performance capability to its popular small crossover. Inspired by Dakar Rally vehicles known for their endurance and rugged performance in harsh desert conditions, SPAD’s engineers designed the RAV-X from the ground up, overseeing every aspect from initial sketches to 3D-printed parts and final assembly.

According to Jakin Wilson, senior engineering manager at SPAD, the project’s goal was to “create a halo vehicle concept for the RAV4 lineup.” Drawing on Toyota’s extensive experience in off-road vehicle development, the team focused on enhancing the RAV-X’s agility and stability for high-speed off-road applications.

The RAV-X is built on the 2024 RAV4 PHEV platform, which delivers a combined 302 horsepower. Toyota included a ram air intake to support off-road demands and leveraged the PHEV’s low center of gravity, which is ideal for challenging terrains. Under the chassis, SPAD engineers introduced a suspension system with a two-inch lift and expanded track width by 6.3 inches. The setup features custom, fully adjustable 2.5-inch internal bypass shocks with dual-speed compression tuning for better control on rough terrain. Front external reservoirs and rear piggyback reservoirs ensure that shock oil temperatures remain stable during intense off-road use. Additionally, forged aluminum front lower control arms and rear upper supports reinforce durability.

The RAV-X’s exterior includes high-clearance skid plates on the front and rear, raised rocker panels, and a Dakar-inspired bumper with integrated cooling ducts. Fender flares with front-wheel ventilation further optimize cooling and airflow. The RAV-X rolls on 17×8.5-inch forged aluminum wheels fitted with 265/65R17 tires to enhance approach and departure angles crucial for off-road performance. Aerodynamic features include an aggressive rear spoiler, strategic front venting, and a high-clearance dual exhaust system integrated into the rear bumper.

Mike Tripp, group vice president of Toyota Division Marketing, noted the concept’s ambition to “show an entirely new possibility” for Toyota’s RAV4. Let’s hope this vision becomes a reality soon.
