Arts Beat: Symphony matinee explores space, Majestic play looks to Lowell


The Springfield Symphony Orchestra presents an afternoon of out-of-this-world music on Nov. 4, from Holst’s “The Planets” to Mozart’s “Jupiter Symphony.” Nicholas Hersh is the guest conductor at this 2:30 p.m. matinee concert in Springfield Symphony Hall. For details: www.springfiueldsymphony.org.

“Moulin Rouge! The Musical,” winner of 10 Tony Awards including “Best Musical,” will play two weeks at The Bushnell, Nov. 21 to Dec. 3. Inspired by the film of the same name, “Moulin Rouge” opened on Broadway in 2019, shut down for the COVID-19 pandemic, and reopened in 2021. It is known for its lavish sets, sumptuous costumes, and a huge dose of razzle-dazzle. “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” is directed by Tony Award winner Alex Timbers and with a book by Tony winner John Logan, choreography by Tony winner Sonya Tayeh and music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Tony winner Justin Levine. The design team includes Tony winner Derek McLane (sets), Tony winner Catherine Zuber (costumes), Tony winner Justin Townsend (lighting), Tony winner Peter Hylenski (sound), Drama Desk Award winner David Brian Brown (wig and hair design), Sarah Cimino (make-up design) and Tony winner Matt Stine (music producer).
